Wiley announced its Papermill Detection Service on 13 March 2024 at the London Book Fair, after internal beta tests, with the next phase of testing planned with Sage and IEEE. The service runs six tools: comparison with known paper mill papers, recognition of problematic phrases such as tortured phrases, detection of unusual publication behaviour by authors, researcher identity verification, detection of generative AI content, and a check of how relevant an article is to the journal’s scope. Wiley said it would offer the service through its Research Exchange submission and peer review system as soon as the following year. Wiley told Retraction Watch that editors review the papers the service flags. Wiley’s Research Exchange system now lists AI-powered papermill detection among its research integrity tools, and Wiley says more than 1,000 journals use Research Exchange.
