PLOS's Open Science Indicators dataset, built with DataSeer, uses NLP and AI to identify and quantify open science practices in published literature. The fourth quarterly update covers January 2019 to June 2023 and adds a preliminary protocol-sharing indicator to the existing three: data sharing, code sharing and preprint posting.
Benefits & outcomes
4.5 years of open science practice data, openly available.
Comparator corpus doubled to 16,023 non-PLOS articles for sturdier comparison.
Gives institutions and funders something to actually measure open science against.
Notes & quotes
"For the first half of 2023, all four indicators remain stable overall, consistent with patterns observed in 2022."
