Alchemist Review

Alchemist Review is an AI tool from Hum, built with Grounded AI, that helps editors and reviewers assess manuscripts. Hum launched it on 11 March 2025, and it extracts and analyses the text, images and citations of a manuscript, identifies its core claims, assesses methods, statistics and novelty, validates citations with Grounded AI’s technology, and includes a chatbot that answers questions about the manuscript inside the review environment. Hum has since added journal fit scoring, which evaluates novelty, scope and alignment with a journal’s mission. The tool has been tested and adopted by several publishers:

  • From April 2025, one journal editorial team at each of AIP Publishing, the American Physical Society and IOP Publishing piloted it as part of the Purpose-Led Publishing coalition.
  • In September 2025, IEEE began a pilot.
  • In December 2025, IOP Publishing announced that it is exploring wider use across most of its proprietary journals, with IOP editors contributing to new features during 2026.
  • In June 2026, AIP Publishing announced that it is adding Alchemist Review as a quality-control layer for AIP Conference Proceedings, which has published more than 100,000 articles.

Benefits & outcomes

  • Hum reports that editors save an average of 20 minutes per manuscript.
  • Hum reports that decision times fell by 20 to 40%.
  • In the Purpose-Led Publishing pilot, editors at all three publishers said the tool added value for repetitive administrative work, and named citation checking, metadata validation and ethics compliance as the areas of most benefit.

Notes & quotes

  • The pilot report says the manuscript digest “didn’t always capture a paper’s nuance”, and that full reports sometimes took longer to generate than wanted.
  • Clarke & Esposito, in their analysis of the pilot, conclude that such tools help with structured checks and are limited for tasks that need interpretive judgment.
  • “We’re not trying to replace editorial judgment; we’re amplifying it.” Hum, in its ALPSP blog post of 5 September 2025.
  • “Reviewer fatigue, long turnaround times, and growing manuscript volumes are huge issues.” Dustin Smith, Hum co-founder, at launch.
