Springer Nature’s Research Integrity Group deployed this tool, then called Geppetto, in November 2023 to detect AI-generated text in manuscripts, which Springer Nature describes as a classic indication of paper mill activity. Springer Nature developed it with its Slimmer AI Science division. It divides a paper into sections, checks the consistency of the text in each section and gives each a probability score for AI generation, and higher scores lead to a check by Springer Nature staff. It pre-screens the majority of submissions to Springer Nature books and journals, often before they enter the editorial workflow. On 30 April 2025 Springer Nature announced that it was donating the tool to STM for use in the STM Integrity Hub, and by August 2025 Springer Nature was calling it the nonsense text detector.
Benefits & outcomes
- Springer Nature reports that the tool has identified hundreds of fake papers soon after submission.
Notes & quotes
- “We are delighted we will now be able to share this technology with the wider publishing community.” Chris Graf, Director of Research Integrity, Springer Nature.
- Joris van Rossum of STM Solutions said that wider use “will help to further train the tool and improve its accuracy”.
