AIRA is the in-house AI assistant that Frontiers uses to check manuscripts, created in 2018 and announced in July 2020, when it read each submission and made up to 20 recommendations in seconds on language quality, figure integrity, plagiarism and potential conflicts of interest. In July 2025 Frontiers added Cactus Communications’ Paperpal Preflight and Clear Skies’ Papermill Alarm and Oversight to AIRA. In September 2025 Frontiers said AIRA ran more than 40 quality control checks on every submission in under two minutes, including fifteen checks for papermill detection, and that it flags potential issues for editors and reviewers to judge.
