A11y, AI and alt text

Bloomsbury tried an AI cloud service to generate alt text for the Fashion Photography Archive — 775,000+ images. The quality was too low to use, and the AI itself created a QA burden of its own. A useful negative result in a table full of success stories.

Benefits & outcomes

The honest lesson: at 775K images, automated alt text looked like the only feasible route, and it still wasn't good enough without human QA that undid the savings.
