Cambridge AI and the AI Publishing Collective hosted a joint meetup on ‘AI in Publishing’ at Fora Folgate Street on May 14. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout from across the Publishing, AI, and Tech communities.
1. Ivy Cavendish (Springer Nature)
Ivy Cavendish opened the evening by asking an important question: When should we not use AI? Her key message was that not every problem needs an AI solution. Often, simpler or cheaper tools, or just fresh thinking, can solve a problem more effectively. She reminded us that “when you have a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.” Her talk was a grounded and thoughtful way to begin the evening.
2. Richard Bennett (Hum) and Nick Morley (GroundedAI)
Richard Bennett and Nick Morley demoed two new tools designed to streamline peer review and editorial workflows:
- Alchemist Review: an AI tool that analyses manuscripts for structure, methods, and overall quality
- Veracity: a citation-checking tool that evaluates the relevance and accuracy of references
These tools are currently being tested by publishers, including AIP, and are designed to reduce repetitive tasks while helping maintain editorial standards.
3. Mark Riley and Ed Daniels (Mathison AI)
Mark Riley and Ed Daniels shared how publishers like News Corp and academic publishers like AIP are using AI in editorial operations. They offered real-world case studies and insights on what it takes to deploy AI responsibly in publishing workflows. They also demoed HANA News (Beta), a tool that automates the creation of email newsletters by sourcing and formatting content in seconds. Mark shared a set of useful resources for anyone working with AI:
- Media Morph – his free weekly newsletter on AI and media
- A curated list of top AI courses, blogs, newsletters, and podcasts
- Shelf Image – a fun tool that generates custom imaginary bookshelves
Big thanks to Mark Rogers , Konrad Rzezniczak and Team from Cambridge AI, to Rhys Morris and the team at Fora for their warm hospitality, and to RedTech Recruitment for fuelling the evening with excellent drinks and charcuterie.
