IOP Publishing’s Duplicate Review Checker is a machine-learning tool that detects duplicate peer review reports, meaning the same reviewer report submitted for multiple manuscripts or reports submitted under different reviewer names. A case is flagged when more than 60% of a report’s content closely matches other reviews, and the flag goes to IOP Publishing’s Research Integrity team, which investigates, after which the duplicate report is discarded and new reviewers are appointed. IOP Publishing piloted the tool in 2024, and it is now part of its publication workflow on all of its proprietary journals and some partner journals.
Benefits & outcomes
- IOP Publishing reports that about 500,000 reviewer reports dating back to 2020 have been processed.
- IOP Publishing reports that nearly 2,500 cases above the 60% threshold have been identified.
Notes & quotes
- “This tool is a powerful addition to our efforts to defend high peer review standards.” Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review and Research Integrity, IOP Publishing.
- IOP Publishing says it will openly share how the tool was developed with other publishers.
