Springer Nature developed an AI tool in-house that checks the relevance of each reference in manuscripts submitted to almost all of its journals and books, and it launched the tool in April 2025. If several references in a submission are judged irrelevant, the Research Integrity Group flags the submission, reviews the manuscript manually and decides whether it should be withdrawn. Springer Nature says human oversight stays in place, in line with its AI Principles.
Notes & quotes
- Springer Nature says the tool went through several rounds of testing and validation, and that training and development will continue.
- Chris Graf, Director of Research Integrity at Springer Nature, said that as AI-generated fake papers become more effective, reference checking is “a key opportunity to identify these unethical efforts.”
