An AACR journal classified Letters to the Editor as human-written, AI-written or uncertain. AI-written letters were rejected outright until 22 April 2025, when one author was told their letter was being positively considered — after which another AI-written letter arrived on 26 April, then several more in quick succession, mostly generated with DeepSeek and following one easily identifiable template.

A small natural experiment: signal that AI submissions respond to incentives almost immediately.
